Insulation Types in Your Home’s Doors

An improperly installed door or an energy-inefficient model does more harm than good. If you’ve noticed a draft or irregularly frequent air conditioning activations, it may be time to consider replacing it with a fiberglass door. 

One common type of residential exterior door has a steel skin with a polyurethane foam insulation core. It usually includes a magnetic strip (similar to a refrigerator door magnetic seal) as weather stripping to insulate your home from the harsh Nevada weather. Weather stripping is installing a foam or vinyl strip at your door’s edges to stop air from leaking in and out. If installed correctly and not bent, this type of door needs no further weather stripping.

Glass or “patio” doors, especially sliding doors, leak much more heat than other types of doors because glass, while visually appealing, is a poor insulator. Most modern glass doors with metal frames have a thermal break, which is a plastic insulator between inner and outer parts of the frame. Models with several layers of glass, low-emissivity coatings, and low-conductivity gasses between the glass panes are usually a sound investment considering Las Vegas’s heat index.
